Westcott Youth Club meets every Thursday from 8pm until 9.30pm for 14-19 year olds. It also meets on Friday's from 4pm until 5.30pm for children aged 10-14 years.

It's a relaxed environment where the children play games, chat and hang out in a safe and fun environment. The three previous volunteers have been excellent, but are moving on to university or other things and so Stuart, the Youth & Community Worker, is in  need of some fresh faces!

On sunny days, they head over to the park for a game or cricket, football or whatever else the kids want to do. They also go on day trips with the kids - sailing, go karting, cycling, games in the sun, high ropes and laser quest.

You can get involved in running the youth club and any news ideas you have would also be welcome. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and/or is considering a career in youth work, social care or teaching (Two of the previous volunteers have gone on to be teachers!)

Stuart Ryland set up Westcott Youth Club in 2008. Since then, it has grown and grown – from five young people coming every week and two volunteers, to an average of 15 young people and four volunteers on Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons.

Here is what one volunteer had to say: “The best thing about the youth club is that every session is different. The children are all so different too. They all know each other and look out for each other. I get on really well with Simon and Tom, the other volunteers.”

Simon, aged 22, volunteers at the club: “There is a real need for this club. There’s not much to do in Westcott for young people, so this is ideal. The best thing about the club?....being one of the kids!”

Simon has a BA Hons in Education from Brighton University, so the club gives him practical experience of working with young people.

Finally, here is what volunteer Tom (aged 22) (pictured playing quick cricket at the club) has to say about Westcott Youth Club: “I wanted to do something useful between leaving the Navy in October 2009 and starting my teacher training course. I’ve volunteered at Mid Surrey Young Carers, and have just spent a week volunteering in a school to get some experience in a classroom. Volunteering at the youth club is very different though! There are fewer rules and regulations. We don’t have to be so strict with the kids. They’re here to enjoy themselves. There’s a nice atmosphere here.”
