The role involves providing practical support to children and families affected by cancer with everyday tasks. Volunteers are required to provide vital assistance with everyday tasks to allow children and families to lead, as normal a life as possible whilst coping with cancer.
Volunteers may choose to offer some time on a hospital ward doing activities with children in for treatment or accompanying a parent on a hospital visit or taking a sibling to social activates so they do not miss out. The type of tasks available can vary considerably and it is up to each volunteer as to the type of support that they wish to offer. Some volunteers may wish to focus on work with children, parents or if preferred opportunities may arise where they are able to work on their own initiative.
Volunteers providing this assistance will develop invaluable skills in providing key family support to children, young people and families. Volunteers will gain an essential understanding of childhood cancer as well as protection and safeguarding.
No formal qualifications are necessary but prior experience of working with children and young people or with families in social or health setting would be ideal.
Most important is that volunteers are caring, tactful, flexible and able to meet the specific need of each volunteering opportunity. Sensitivity and the ability to listen and communicate well with others are paramount.
We need volunteers to provide support across Leeds , Bradford, York, Hull, Halifax. There are opportunities to volunteer at the LGI in Leeds but also in families homes and communities across Yorkshire
