Darwin’s Emotion experiment is trying to recreate a research study conducted originally in 1868 by Charles Darwin for his book, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.

Among other things with this experiment, he wanted to discover whether core emotions existed regardless of  a person's race, creed, upbringing etc.  In other words, could human beings detect and provide the same description about an emotion they saw expressed on a person’s face.  Darwin used eleven black and white photos of a face posed in various different expressions that were actually obtained by prodding electrical rods at different locations on a real person's face! These photos were then passed around his colleagues and acquaintances for their opinions on what they thought each expression represented.

Nearly 150 years later, the same experiment is being conducted with the same photos, but this time using something called the internet.  They are hoping to crowdsource a larger user base than what Darwin was able to obtain and consequently report on their findings in due course.

Participating in this experiment simply involves looking at each of the eleven original photos via the website and typing in what you think each expression conveys.  It should take approximately one minute to complete and it assumes that you are not familiar with the results that Darwin previously obtained. The researchers running this study would like to state that no humans were harmed in recreating this experiment!
