Severe loneliness affects 1 in 10 elderly people within the U.K.
As the older generation loses family, friends and mobility many become trapped within their own homes coming into contact with people less than once a week.
More than half of people over the age of 75 are living alone and 40% do not know where to turn for help.
Loneliness has not only psychological effects but people that suffer from severe loneliness also are at risk of shortened life spans. Loneliness can cause immune or cardiac issues as well as triggering the onset of Alzheimer’s.
With 65% of people aged over 65 feeling out of touch with the pace of modern life and 9% saying they feel cut off from society, this is a serious issue which really hits home for many people.
Everyone know an elderly person and no-one would ever want anyone to suffer in this way. 50% of elderly people say that the television is their main form of company and we want to stop this!
Team v proposes to help the older generation in and around Wokingham and Reading by holding focus groups, activity days and raising awareness for a sustainable solution.
