ANIMATE Festival 2012
Bringing light and life to the streets of Kingston
16 February to 24 March
Supported by the Mayor of London’s Outer London FundWelcome to the world of ANIMATE where winter is about to be turned upside down. This season will see the streets of Kingston brought to life by a new festival commissioned by Creative Youth, organisers of the International Youth Arts Festival and supported by the Mayor of London’s Outer London Borough Fund.
ANIMATE’S aim is to bring vibrancy and creativity to the town centre at a time when it is dark and cold. Through an enticing programme of dance, theatre, music, puppetry, film, sculpture, circus art, projection and lighting installation, the lost spaces of Kingston will be illuminated by an intriguing trail of creativity and surprising encounters. ANIMATE will put light into the darkness, warmth into the cold and breathe energy into the sleeping places.
Funded by the GLA, ANIMATE and Creative Youth are working with young artists to help support the growth and stability of our high street working with local shops and businesses. Eight young companies and more than 50 young performers, artists and programmers have been collaborating during the past few months to create Animate. Inspired by four major Kingston heritage themes, their ideas will encourage visitors to seek out the lost places of Kingston where who knows what can be found? A dancing bicycle, a mobile cinema, part of a plane – it’s all out there waiting to be discovered!
ANIMATE Festival will be running events on Monday and Thursday evenings from 16th February through to March 24th 2012. There will be extra special things happening on the 3rd March and the 24th March.

We are looking for volunteers to help us run this festival and we need you for a number of things:
- MAKING – We are looking for volunteers who are happy to get stuck in. Me&You Studio, one of the companies who have been commissioned for ANIMATE 2012, need some assistance in making and building umbrella lights. These will then be displayed as an installation during the festival.
- STEWARDING – Although ANIMATE is going to be quite different to IYAF, we still need help making sure that everything runs smoothly. Ideally we are looking for stewards to be present on all days that ANIMATE events are taking place. Their purpose is to make sure that spectators know what they are watching, know that it is part of ANIMATE and know how to get to the website for more information.
- MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS – We need volunteers to help us let everyone know that ANIMATE is happening and what events are going to be taking place during the course of the festival.
- STREET PRESCENCE TEAM – We are looking for a designated group of people to work with theatre company, Little Cauliflower. Their commission for ANIMATE 2012 is all to do with things popping up and creating little, unexpected surprises for the spectators. Ideally, we are looking for a dedicated group of volunteers who can be entrusted with keeping the commission running whilst Little Cauliflower are not in Kingston. The volunteers for this special task will be briefed by the company and will be guided through it by them.
If you are interested in any of the above or have an idea of how you might like to assist with ANIMATE 2012, please contact jackdimes@hotmail.co.uk or molly_freeman@hotmail.co.uk.
