· Each one of us has a circle of friends who make an enormous difference to our quality of life in so many ways. Circles of Support “organises” the opportunity for friendship and support for a young person affected by disability through introducing volunteers to them and helping friendship to develop. Each volunteer is asked to commit 4 hours of their time per month - this could equate to spending an afternoon with the young person or an hour each week, perhaps watching T.V. or just hanging out at home. The Circle is very flexible and aims to work to everyone's strengths who together work to support the Young person's goals.
Each individual Circle of Support will typically consist of 4-6 volunteers, including at least 3 peer volunteers, who will support the young person to access activities or just do the things other teenagers are able to do freely and easily...simply 'hanging out' and spending time together. Adult volunteers also join the Circle to provide experience and a blend of support – and often transport. The whole approach is inclusive and tailored to the needs of the Young person in the centre of the Circle.
The group will meet as a circle every 6 weeks with the support of the Co-ordinator and will review with the young person how their circle is working and what the young person wants to do or achieve in the immediate and longer-term. This can be about planning a trip or about supporting access to learning, employment or a new activity. All circle members gain life, organisational and relational skills – and learn the value of mutual care and support. Your volunteering hours can also be a great way to achieve Duke of Edinburgh Awards or your Volunteering Certificates.....and the experience will be a great addition to your CV.
