The idea of a “listening service” to help others when they lose their guide dog either through retirement or death was put forward by a guide dog owner. In 2008 a project board was set up to run a pilot scheme for one year. Guide dog owners were trained in “active listening” skills and the pilot scheme went live in October 2008. The service has been very successful in the first year, taking calls, sharing in sad times and listening to tales with laughter and tears. Feedback from callers and staff was so positive and encouraging that we decided to continue the service and its good work. To enable us to provide this service in the future, we are looking to expand the team and recruit more guide dog owner listeners. We are looking for a volunteer to assist the listeners to enable them to give a high quality service. This will involve helping with the recruitment and training stages of the new listeners as well as creating a rota system and supporting them on a regular basis.
