We are looking for volunteers to work with youth offenders or young people who are ‘at risk’ of committing criminal offences.

When we need you:

  • Flexible

If selected, you will undergo two days of training to help you gain the skills required to become a mentor. Bristol MATES works on a request basis – if a member of one of those client schemes believes that a mentor would be suitable for a given young person, they will request one from Bristol MATES. Once we receive a request we will try and match that young person to one of our mentors with similar interests and experience to give the mentoring relationship the best chance of being successful. We will then contact you if we think you are suitable to mentor that young person. You will then meet that young person to explain the scheme. Following this meeting you will meet together for around 2 hours per week for 3-12 months. As you build a relationship with them you will set goals which you will aim to achieve during your time together. Mentors are commonly involved with a range of activities from helping with homework, helping to find college courses/jobs, taking the young person they are working with to sports practises through to teaching them to cook. You will be supported throughout your time as a mentor. You will meet with a member of project management or the young person's caseworker on a monthly basis to get feedback and support. Also, a member of project management is always available should you need to ask any questions or need advice.

  • More info

We are recruiting new volunteer mentors to work with young people age 8-18 in and around Bristol who have either committed a criminal offence or are considered 'at risk' of offending. We mainly work with projects whose aim is early intervention or crime prevention. Volunteer mentors are required to build one-to-one relationships with young people, encouraging and supporting them in their interests. Mentors will set realistic goals with their mentees and help them to achieve these on a weekly basis. Relationships may last between 3 months and a year and are supervised throughout. If you are over 19 and think you would be interested in building this kind of positive relationship with someone in your community, or would like to know more about the project and it’s aims, please click on "I'd like to do this" and we'll send you details on how to apply. Closing date: 30th October 2011.
