Learning for the Fourth Age
Learning for the Fourth Age (L4A) provides one–to–one educational and learning services to care home residents. L4A is a unique, new and innovative social enterprise. We work with a variety of care homes (dementia care homes, rehabilitation centres, mental health centres, and palliative care units etc). However, our main homes are elderly care homes.
L4A encourages older people to follow up existing interests or develop new interests, supported by a volunteer Learning Mentor. Research and trials have shown that providing this stimulation for elderly people can delay the onset of dementia, boost sociability and improve their quality of life. Unfortunately pressures on Care Home staff mean that they rarely have time to provide one-to-one stimulating discussions and activities to the residents themselves.
L4A has been a huge success in Leicester, winning many awards and as result it has secured partial funding to expand into Sheffield.
L4A is now recruiting for new volunteer Learning Mentors for the Sheffield area detailed below:
Learning Mentor (2 to 3 hours per week)
- Enter care homes for a 2 - 3 hour session to provide a variety of stimulating one-to-one learning activities and discussions
- Independently develop and deliver learning activities tailored to resident’s specific needs, interests and hobbies
- Report on progress
This is a great CV boosting anyone wishing to benefit the lives of others. However we anticipate that these roles will be of particular interest to people wishing to gain experience in teaching or mentoring, interested in education, history, art & crafts, occupational therapy, psychology or work within the social care or health setting in general.
Whatever the role, volunteers will have ample opportunity to enhance their interpersonal skills, communication skills and their academic skills whilst simultaneously promoting a genuine intergenerational understanding.
