MOTIVOCEAN MINI-CAMPAIGN ACTIONS!

Through Motivocean events we’re asking youth volunteers to take SAS ‘mini-campaign actions’

As part of the SAS/myGames Motivocean Tour we are encouraging all our youth volunteers to engage even further with voluntary environmental action. Through Motivocean events we’re asking youth volunteers to take SAS ‘mini-campaign actions’ by using & distributing No Butts On the Beach and Think Before You Flush stickers.  Volunteers will also help give out Butt Bins (to stop cigarette butts ending up in the marine environment) to festival-goers at the Oceanfest in Croyde this June. Youth volunteers are also being encouraged to use and distribute our REGIONAL REPS BOOKLET to raise awareness of the network of SAS Regional Reps available to engage with.

As a result of this we are delighted that Falmouth University students have already chosen to put Think Before You Flush stickers in ALL student accommodation!! The first Think Before You Flush campus! What a result!

Think Before You Flush

Every day people are flushing objects such as cotton buds, sanitary products, condoms and razors down the toilet instead of putting them in the bin. Known in the business as sewage related debris or SRD, this can end up on our beautiful beaches and have a huge impact on the water environment. Some of these items are made of plastic and will remain in the marine environment indefinitely, are hazardous to wildlife and can ruin a surf session. Flushing other items can cause many problems, both in the sewage works and later in the marine environment.

No Butts On The Beach

An estimated 4.5 TRILLION cigarette butts enter the environment every year. Just take a few moments to let that sink in, tell someone – it’s a truly frightening figure, 4.5 trillion cigarette butts! During the annual Beachwatch beach litter survey a total of 14,659 cigarette ends were found on 244 beaches around the UK. This represented an astounding 5% of the total litter found during the survey!

SAS Regional Reps

SAS’s talented and dedicated team of SAS Regional Reps having been helping organise Motivocean Beach Clean & Sports events around the country. They are also the perfect point of contact for youth volunteers ongoing engagement with our activities and campaigns. All SAS Reps contribute in their own way, from organising beach cleans and local campaign actions, through to advising on our campaign policy or scientific reports, helping make a huge difference to the marine environment nationwide. This fantastic group of ambassadors are located at or around the top surf and water sports areas in the country. Youth volunteers wanting to get more involved in their area should drop their Regional Rep an email or give them a call. Youth volunteers interested in becoming part of the network of Regional Reps should drop us a line with a CV to info@sas.org.uk
