Most Outstanding NCS Team

The Most Outstanding NCS Team Award celebrates NCS (National Citizen Service) Teams that really embraced the opportunities the scheme presented and worked together to create and deliver a social action project that significantly benefited a local community.  The participants shared ideas and skills and learned from and supported each other to make their team a success.

NCS Stevenage

NCS Stevenage ran an inter-generational project, organising tea dances for older people and building flower boxes for residents of a local retirement home.

The things I get most out of volunteering are…
Helping people and getting to meet new people in the community. It gave me a good feeling, besides being able to help others, we were also able to have fun and the smile on people's faces made me feel like I had done my job.

My volunteering has made an impact on the people I help by…
Bringing back memories and helping people meet new friends. We were able to create flower boxes to give to an elderly peoples' home. Hopefully we have been able to help them through their later years.

Being nominated for a vInspired National Award makes me feel…
Happy and noticed as a teen that doesn’t just sit around doing nothing. It makes me feel proud. I feel totally excited as it’s the best thing I have ever done. All our hard work over the summer period was worth it and we have been able to be nominated because of the great mentors Tracey Lee, Darren Harris, Dawn Edy and Matt Hollandale and the rest of the youth connections in Stevenage.

If I were Prime Minister for the day, the one thing I would change would be…
Make it so everyone has equal opportunities. Make tuition fees for university a maximum of £4000. I believe that to be able to get young adults (teenagers) into work we need to minimise the cost of university because people haven’t got £9000, they want us to get jobs but you need grades( qualifications) that you can only get by going to university.

NCS Harrow

NCS Harrow raised money and awareness of homelessness in their area by holding a sponsored sleep out, as well as cooking for residents of a local homelessness hostel.

The things I get most out of volunteering are…
A unique experience and enjoyable challenge. Learning and actually helping others, creating a change and the ability to meet and network with people which would have never been possible without volunteering.

My volunteering has made an impact on the people I help by…
Raising awareness of homelessness, which is still a major issue even now in the 21st century - even people in our age group (16-17) are affected. Sharing my ideas and my experience in life (which could have made someone learn from my mistakes). And letting people know they are not alone.

Being nominated for a vInspired National Award makes me feel…
Honoured, with a sense of achievement and that doing good things has its rewards sometimes and it also makes me feel inspired to do more. I feel good because I think it’s very beneficial to the young community as young people are being recognised for their achievements.

If I were Prime Minister for the day, the one thing I would change would be…
Change the benefits system to give the people with less opportunity a chance.

NCS Runcorn

NCS Runcorn re-opened a derelict community centre to hold a community fun day and are now working to open the centre permanently.

The things I get most out of volunteering are…
Giving back to the community, meeting new people, networking and building key skills. Also, the sense of accomplishment, the experience of making new friends and getting to know our community.

My volunteering has made an impact on the people I help by…
Making people feel better helps make me feel better. Providing a long term place to come and meet new friends, learn new skills and feel safe. Raising their level of confidence to either volunteer too or get back on track with school or college. Making people feel wanted in their community.

Being nominated for a vInspired National Award makes me feel…
Nice to see our work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Feel special. There are a lot of people in our community who need help and now we can give something back. Happy to have the opportunity to meet other young people who have also worked hard.

If I were Prime Minister for the day, the one thing I would change would be…
Make young people’s views more recognised - make equal rights for young people sand older more experience workers.  Offer more information on local issues (substance misuse), offer more places for young people to go.
