Volunteers will work alongside library staff to help run the Summer Reading Challenge. This will include signing children up to the Challenge, talking to the children about their books, handing out reading rewards and incentives, and helping with summer events and activities. Hours are flexible to suit the volunteer and the library, but we ask you to commit at least 10 hours across the summer holiday period. This opportunity would be ideal for anyone who enjoys working with children.

More info
Libraries get very busy in the summer holidays, dealing with all the children who sign-up for the Summer Reading Challenge. Last year 780,000 children took part throughout the UK. The 2013 Challenge is called Creepy House. Library staff need help to enrol the children in the Challenge and support them throughout the summer. You will be talking to children (mainly aged 4-11) about their books; handing out rewards and incentives; helping them share ideas on next books to read; and helping with displays and activities in the library. Many libraries will be running workshops and events, with lots of creative activities involving children and families. You will be supported by library staff and given training at the library. You can choose how many hours you do and when you want to come in (minimum 10 hours over the summer). Thousands of young people were involved in volunteering during last year’s Summer Reading Challenge - called Story Lab
