  • More info

There is a long strip of hedgerow along the canal that is nearly derelict; it's grown all tall and straggly and is no longer much use as a barrier or as cover for wildlife. What this hedge needs is laying - the ancient technique of cutting and bending over the trunks leaving just enough bark intact for the plant to grow up again stronger and more bushy. It looks brutal, but is actually good for the hedge, making it live longer. Its physical work and good exercise – but don’t worry if you haven’t done it before or are a bit unfit – there will be full training and you can take it at your own pace. You provide the enthusiasm, we provide the tools and the brews! We are planning to do a wide variety of tasks around this stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool canal in the coming months, so this day will be a great introducton to the canals history and ecology.
