The Towpath of the Shropshire Union Canal runs alongside two small nature reserves, one of which is particularly good habitat for butterflies. Some woodland areas were planted years ago and are growing well – but they now need to be thinned out to allow the remaining trees have more room to grow, and to let more light in for wildflowers that butterflies feed on. There are also some stands of hazel that need to be coppiced (cut down to the base, encouraging new shoots) for the same reasons. We will be working with Robyn the ranger to do these jobs, and also in the next few weeks to repair the path, mend the fences, and re-paint a sculpture by the entrance. If anyone wants to get creative, we could also make a new nature guide leaflet to encourage people to walk along the canal and enjoy the fruits of our hard work at both reserves.
