there are two sides to this opportunity: collecting raw data on environment and heritage structure in the feild (for which you willl need your own transport) and cleansing and analysing the data, which can be done from the office in Northwich. You will be working in a team of proffessionals - so if you dont already have GIS experience this is agreat chance to get it!

British Waterways cares for 0ver 2000 miles of canals and rivers throughout the UK, and is responsible for keeping these historic structures in good condition. In Cheshire and North Wales there is a real need to update records of wildlife, heritage structures and engineering data – and a real work experience opportunity for anyone interested in GIS in an environmental or asset management setting!
Based at the British Waterways offices in Northwich, tasks may include:
· Using ArcGIS to check and cleanse data for inconsistencies and erroneous results
· Entering and manipulating the data collected by others
· Collecting your own data for use in GIS models
· Setting up and undertaking your own hedge surveys or invasive species surveys to add to the data pool.
This role may suit a recent graduate or a student studying a subject that uses GIS such as geography. Someone interested in computers and the environment may also be interested.
This is an opportunity to learn new skills, get out in the fresh air, and meet new people - but its also valuable experience for your CV.
