British Waterways look after over 2000 miles of canals, many of which have hedges running alongside that are a home for wildlife and a part of the heritage landscape. Too many of these are nearly derelict – grown all tall and straggly and no longer much use as a barrier or as cover for wildlife. Thousands of miles of hedgerow have been lost this way in the last 50 years, and its been a major blow for the creatures that depend on them for food, shelter and as safe corridors to get from one habitat to another.
What this hedge needs is laying –the ancient technique of cutting and bending over the trunks just leaving just enough bark intact for the plant to grow up again stronger and more bushy. It looks brutal, but is actually good for the hedge, making it regenerate and live longer.
Dont worry if you havent done any of this before - we'll give you full training, and provide the tools and the brews! We are planning to do a wide variety of tasks around this stretch of the Shropshire Union canal in the coming months, so this 6 week training programme will be a great introducton to the canals history and ecology.
