We are looking for talented young musicians who would like to join in music and songwriting workshops and write some new pieces to celebrate the Waterways (that’s canals and rivers to you and me) with Tom Kitching fiddle player and canal enthusiast extraordinaire, and renowned Singer-songwriter Gren Bartley . You can work as a soloist, as an existing band, or create a new act with other volunteers – this will be a great opportunity to meet other musicians and swap ideas.
To mark the centenary of the birth of Tom Rolt, co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA), Waterways Action Squad is teaming up with the IWA and British Waterways to put on a showcase of young musical talent. You will have the chance to muck about on boats, track down rare wildlife, dig deep into industrial archaeology and generally explore what the waterways are all about and how they are relevant to young people today. Then, Inspired by all that, we would like you to write some new music – in your own style – expressing what the canals and rivers mean to you. Professional musicians will be on hand to help you bring it all together, and celebrations will culminate in waterways inspired performances on and around the boats at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, in the run up to Christmas. Further performances are planned across the North west.
If you want to, you could also have a hand in organising the events – its up to you how much you want to take on. Supported by the Waterways Action Squad team, tasks could include:
- Recruiting other young musicians to take part
- Helping to plan and deliver music workshops in the run up to the event
- Helping to organising group visits to key waterways sites such as; National Waterways Museum and Anderton Boat Lift
- Getting the music professionally recorded and producing a CD
- Helping to develop marketing and publicity
- Updating our website, blog and social networking groups
- Documenting the workshops and event to make sure that we get plenty of good pictures to use for publicity
- Helping us to evaluate what went right or wrong after the event
Using your knowledge and enthusiasm to create an enjoyable and attention grabbing event that will get more young people like you exited about waterways – and above all, have fun!
