What?An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a number of volunteers to investigate the invertebrate ecology at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. An indicator for a healthy water system is the number of plant and animal species that survive there, with specific water bodies having specific indicator species. We wish to establish if the water in and around the museum is reaching its ecological potential and which species, if any, thrive here. The aim of this investigation will be to discover the nature and extent of all of the creepy crawlies living in the water in the unused and derelict boats in the museum boatyard, and if they differ from things living in the water outside the boats in the canal. Who? Anyone interested in ecology or hydrology or someone who just wants to give dipping a go! You don’t need to know the names of the creepy crawlies as we have books and the internet for that, so if you’re interested get in touch

More info
Canals and rivers are beautiful places & havens for all sorts of wildlife – but can also be sadly neglected & in need of habitat management and improvement. On many stretches we don’t even know for sure what wildlife is there! This opportunity would see you working closely with the Volunteer Leader, British Waterways ecologists & other volunteers. We will also be working alongside the local Canal Societies to preserve the historic structures & industrial archaeology. This is an opportunity to learn new skills, get out in the fresh air, meet new people & gain valuable experience for your CV. Tasks could include: towpath maintenance, hedge-laying, litter-busting, coppicing, planting native species & installing bird, bee & bat boxes, completing wildlife surveys, developing games & spotters guides & promoting the work we are doing to enthuse others about the wonders of waterway wildlife!! PLEASE NOTE: We are currently only funded in Lancashire/Cheshire/ Merseyside - Sorry! -
