Canals and rivers can be beautiful places and a real haven for all sorts of wildlife – but can also be sadly neglected and in need of habitat management and improvement. On many stretches we don’t even know for sure what wildlife is there! This opportunity would see you working closely with the Volunteer leader either on one off events of a regular team completing tasks such as towpath tidying, wildflower planting or whatever is necessary that particular week to ensure the local canal area is kept accessible to all.
We have a regular work parties on:
- Leeds-Liverpool Canal Liverpool and Sefton, going out every second Wednesday to address whatever conservation and maintenance issues as needed.
- Shropshire Union Canal in Ellesmere Port every Friday - From Autumn 2010 with FREE Hedge-laying training!
- one off events across the North-West from Lancaster down to Stoke and Mersyside to the Pennines
This is an opportunity to learn new skills, get out in the fresh air, and meet new people - but its also valuable experience for your CV. You don’t need to commit to attending every time, even coming once a month would be a help, but running on the same day every two weeks means you won’t forget which day to come!
Tasks could include:
- Helping the Volunteer Leader organise practical tasks such as towpath maintenance, painting and repairing walls, benches etc.
- Conservation tasks such as hedge-laying, litter-busting, coppicing, planting native species and installing bird, bee and bat boxes
- There will also be opportunity for wildlife spotting and to learn surveying techniques
