5 Things We’ve Learnt About Food Poverty

At the beginning of Team v’s food poverty campaign, Beyond Food, it was clear why we were so hungry for change. Since then, 95 Leaders and 280 volunteers have held food drives, collecting over 35,000 meals for families in need.

Team v Leader shares what this campaign has taught us.

1. The Root Causes of Food Poverty

There are countless reasons why someone may find themselves in food poverty: redundancy, debt, family breakdown, benefit delays, and illness, to name a few. With food prices rising but wages remaining stagnant, many people are turning to food banks as a last resort. Team v Newcastle explored some of these reasons in this short film.

2. How Food Banks Work

Before this campaign, I didn’t realize food poverty was such a significant issue, nor did I know where my nearest food bank was. By connecting with my local food bank, I learned that to receive food, one must obtain a voucher from a doctor, social worker, police officer, or school. Once referred, three days of emergency food are provided, alongside relevant support to help individuals regain stability.

3. Food’s Role in Physical Wellbeing

We were challenged to live off a typical food parcel for three days to foster empathy towards those in crisis. Many Leaders documented this through blogs and vlogs, prompting reflection on the crucial role food plays in our ability to function, mood, and happiness.

4. Food Banks Rely on Donations

Without support from local people and organizations, food banks like The Trussell Trust couldn’t keep up with demand. In a short period, we collectively managed to donate over 35,000 items of food, assisting many individuals.

5. Young Volunteers Have the Power to Make a Difference

Starting a campaign like this can be daunting due to the magnitude of the problem nationwide. Although we haven’t eradicated UK food poverty, we’ve helped thousands and inspired others to join the effort.
