4 Creative Shop Designs Led by Retail Ready Volunteers

Celebrating Community Innovation

It’s been one year, 60 volunteers, 7,000 volunteer hours, and four pop-up shops since our Retail Ready People programme first opened its doors. This initiative, in partnership with Retail Trust, has left a lasting impact, with our volunteers blazing a retail trail that communities will cherish.

Shaking Up Bargain Hunting

Our Retail Ready volunteers took on the challenge of transforming bargain hunting into a memorable experience. By leveraging creativity and collaboration, they left a profound mark on local communities.

A Crafty Takeaway

In 2012, the Retail Ready People of Brighton launched Make Away—a shop where customers could screen-print t-shirts, bags, aprons, tea towels, and cards right before their eyes. The unique aspect of this shop was its interactive nature, encouraging customers to print their own products and craft their own items during in-store workshops. By using prints from local designers and selling locally made artwork and jewelry, Make Away became a hub of creativity and innovation.

A Community Christmas

Volunteers in Enfield focused on fostering a warm and festive spirit. They sold clothes, gifts, and accessories made in Enfield, supporting local traders and designers. The volunteers brought fresh energy to Enfield, a community recovering from the 2011 summer riots. Cosy Cove exemplified how young people can unite communities and counter negative stereotypes through volunteering. Cheers to their success with a toast of Eggnog!

Colour Me Creative

The Rochdale team introduced a vibrant and interactive way to rekindle community spirit. Their shop featured posters, t-shirts, and tote bags designed by local artists under the ‘Made in Rochdale’ theme. Locals eagerly participated in co-designing their own Rochdale merchandise, actively supporting local talent. Workshops and tutorials on graffiti lettering, peg animals, and t-shirt design empowered every customer to unleash their creativity.

Lounging Around

In Leeds, the team redefined customer service by creating a relaxing social space within the shop. Visitors could unwind in the ‘in-shop living room,’ complete with comfy seating, games, books, and live entertainment from Leeds’ best local talent—all paired with a strong cup of tea.
