9,000 Young People Volunteered in Libraries This Summer
This summer, approximately 9,000 young people engaged in volunteering to support 800,000 children in exploring and enjoying books at libraries during their school holidays. Many of these enthusiastic volunteers participated in Reading Hack, a national program by The Reading Agency aimed at individuals aged 13-24. Reading Hack offers youth the opportunity to gain experience and develop essential life skills through volunteering and reading-centric activities, known as ‘hacks’. Hacks can range from poetry-themed DJ sets and novel-inspired Minecraft sessions to book-related filmmaking and supporting others in reading.
Young volunteers played a pivotal role in local libraries by organizing and promoting events, taking control of library social media accounts, creating engaging displays, and enrolling children in The Big Friendly Read, the Summer Reading Challenge 2016.
One volunteer shared, “This has been a fantastic experience, enhancing my communication skills and boosting my confidence in interacting with others.”
Librarians have praised the invaluable support of young volunteers, stating that the Summer Reading Challenge could not reach its high standards without their contributions. Volunteering in libraries is highly successful as it allows young individuals to engage in their communities, gain vital work experience, and enhance their CVs and applications for higher education. Additionally, it provides experience in working with children, which is crucial for careers like teaching.
From October 24 to November 6, Reading Hack will further engage young people in libraries through the Reading Hack does #LovetoRead festival. This two-week celebration precedes the BBC #LovetoRead weekend on November 5-6, offering volunteering opportunities, Reading Hack activities, and author events with notable figures like Juno Dawson, Samantha Shannon, and Holly Bourne at select libraries nationwide.
Young people can learn more about Reading Hack by visiting www.readinghack.org.uk. They can also inquire at their local library about participating in the BBC #LoveToRead weekend. For festival updates, follow @ReadingHackers on Twitter and Instagram, or sign up for the Reading Hack newsletter.
