A Big Week for Youth Policy as Government Makes Major Announcements
As we approach the end of the year, the Government is attempting to bring some festive cheer to young people—a much-needed gesture after a tough year. In recent weeks, the Government announced the Youth Contract, a Youth Participation Strategy, and now the Positive for Youth statement. This series of announcements marks a significant moment for youth policies in the UK.
After extensive discussions with the youth sector, local authorities, businesses, and young people, the Government has outlined its vision for a society that is positive about young people. However, this vision comes with the challenge of minimal public investment. Except for the National Citizen Service, central government funding for out-of-school services remains limited.
The inclusion of policies from at least nine government departments in the statement is commendable. However, there is a lack of clear, decisive actions to improve the opportunities available to young people. That’s why Vinspired, in collaboration with NCVYS and other members, is calling on the Government to ensure every department and local authority publishes its own ‘youth action plan’. We aim for actionable support enabling young people to achieve their potential, urging decision-makers to be bold in implementing their vision.
At Vinspired, we are committed to maximizing resources to support young people. We urge Government departments and local authorities to do the same, reinforcing the importance of volunteering for young people and youth volunteering programs and initiatives.
