August’s Volunteer Hero
August’s Volunteer Hero is Shanice, whose inspiring journey through volunteering sets a shining example for everyone at Vinspired.
How does it feel to be our Volunteer of the Month winner?
I’m more than shocked, to be honest!
Tell me about your volunteering
Shanice began volunteering during college, helping at a local hospital as a hospital volunteer on the wards, offering drinks and company to patients. Her move to university marked a shift to diverse roles, including serving on a rugby club’s committee, acting as a media officer for her university team, and working as a social secretary at Rosslyn Park.
What’s been your most surprising or memorable volunteering moment to date?
The most surprising moment was realizing the profound impact of taking time to chat with patients, who truly appreciated the interaction.
What’s been your most awkward volunteering moment? How did you cope?
On a colorectal ward, some situations can get awkward, but with resilience and staying positive, Shanice managed to laugh it off and move on.
What skills have you gained through volunteering?
Volunteering has significantly enhanced Shanice’s communication skills, boosting her confidence and allowing her to step out of her comfort zone, embracing teamwork and collaboration.
Is your volunteering part of a wider goal or aspiration?
Initially, it was to gain work experience for medical school, but it evolved into a passion. Now, Shanice volunteers for the love of rugby and the community it provides, aiming to give back and help others gain similar experiences.
What would you be doing if you weren’t volunteering?
Without volunteering, Shanice admits she would likely not engage in much beyond her day job, which lacks the fulfillment she finds in volunteering.
What would you like to say to the person who nominated you?
I’d like to say thank you! I really appreciate the nomination and the opportunity to celebrate Pride with Vinspired.
