Getting Started in Film
A little while ago, I attended an end-of-program event organized by a prominent youth-supporting organization. The program, titled “Get Started with Film,” offered young people a unique opportunity to receive training from film industry professionals. Over the course of a week, participants crafted a one-minute short film—a first for many.
During the screening, it was evident that these young individuals had gained considerably from the experience. The five films showcased that evening effectively delivered compelling narratives within their brief run times.
Teamwork and Confidence Building
My main takeaway from the event was the immense benefits young people gain from teamwork. Particularly for those lacking confidence, collaborating on video projects offers a tangible product that can be shared and celebrated.
Long-Term Potential
Witnessing what was achieved in just a few days led me to wonder about the potential outcomes of a six-week or even longer project. The skills learned “on the fly” can be invaluable compared to more traditional educational paths.
Would I choose university again, or would I dive directly into hands-on experiences like these young people? Opinions vary, and both paths have their merits.
