How Jess Transformed from Unemployment to a Community Leader

Jess’s inspiring journey from unemployment to a community leader is a testament to resilience and empathy. After university, Jess faced two tough years of unemployment, compounded by challenges with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Dyscalculia. Facing these hurdles head-on, Jess decided to ignite change by creating a support group for individuals with Dyspraxia, aptly named “Dyspraxic Me.”

Building a Supportive Community

Recognizing the lack of accessible resources, Jess took initiative to build a community where people like her could thrive. Her efforts have led to the establishment of workshops covering diverse topics from finance to yoga, all aimed at enhancing life skills and fostering independence among participants. This initiative exemplifies the power of volunteering to foster community support and improve emotional intelligence.

A Personal Journey

In January 2014, Jess applied for Vinspired’s Cashpoint grant to launch a peer support network for young adults with Dyspraxia aged 16-25. Driven by her own experiences and the absence of a supportive network, she founded “Dyspraxic Me.” This community empowers young individuals to learn in a nurturing environment, sharing vital coping strategies and fostering friendships. Jess’s goal is to help everyone build confidence and achieve greater independence.

Raising Awareness and Expanding Impact

Every October, during Dyspraxia Awareness Week, Jess organizes events to raise awareness. This year’s event at Westminster Reference Library featured speakers like Nathan Gokhool, Alice Knight, and Ioannis Athanasiou, who showcased how art can alter perceptions of disability.

Jess plans to expand “Dyspraxic Me” even further, aiming to offer more workshops and support to people with Dyspraxia. Her continued efforts highlight the importance of resilience and entrepreneurship in driving meaningful community change.
