How Volunteering Saved My Life

At 11 AM this morning, I delivered a lecture to local students, sharing my journey and my untold story—a story I’ve kept to myself for almost 12 years. Today, I felt ready to open up.

I’ve shared parts of my childhood in the past, but not the part detailing my darkest moment. Starting off the talk with a picture of me at 2 years old, I talked about how my nan was my hero. I’d visit her weekly, enjoying her pink wafer biscuits and a glass of milk. She always knew how to cheer me up.

When she passed away, I struggled deeply. My mom was battling breast cancer, my sister had a stroke, and I was severely bullied. At 13, I found myself in a dark place, contemplating suicide. I retreated into my own world, shutting out everyone around me.

Volunteering became my lifeline. It gave me a purpose and a reason to connect with others. I realized I wasn’t alone in my struggles, and sharing my story helped others open up about their own challenges.

This morning, as I spoke to the students, I saw tears in their eyes, and I knew my story had touched them. Some approached me afterward, eager to explore local volunteering opportunities. The immediate impact of my lecture was profound, and I was invited back for another session next year.

How often do we discuss child mental health? How many of us are open about our struggles? One PE teacher at school made me feel welcome. His encouragement gave me a reason to enjoy my childhood. When he passed, I felt compelled to continue his legacy.

Volunteering built my confidence, allowing me to transition from sports volunteering to more personal roles. It’s been a journey of personal growth and empowerment.

Reflecting on my past, I’m motivated to support the mental health community, knowing that sharing our stories can illuminate the path for others. I believe everything happens for a reason. When Flash, my Springer Spaniel and best friend, passed away last year, I was reminded of the profound impact animals can have. His presence gave me a reason to live.

Volunteering has been my path to resilience and staying positive. It’s taught me the importance of emotional intelligence and empathy, and it’s shown me the transformative power of giving back. If my story can help someone else, then every emotion I experience is worthwhile.
