Inspirational Autistic Schoolgirls Volunteer to Tell It Like It Is
Did You Know Girls Are Diagnosed with Autism Later Than Boys?
Girls are often diagnosed with autism later than boys, which can lead to struggles during their formative years without understanding why they feel different. This can make school a particularly challenging time, especially for teenage girls with autism.
What Are We Doing About It?
This month, one of our vInspired Schools is taking the lead in volunteering to raise awareness about autism. We encourage students to actively volunteer within their school communities and initiate projects that can make a real difference.
Limpsfield Grange School in Surrey, a school dedicated to girls with autism, speech, language, communication, and learning difficulties, has been a part of our programme for nearly a year.
One of the students, Beth, was inspired to raise awareness about autism in girls. She understood the challenge that arises from late diagnoses in females, prompting her to take action.
How Did They Fund the Project?
Beth gathered a team of volunteers from her school and applied for a grant through vInspired Cashpoint. They were awarded the grant and used the funds to produce a film that highlights the hopes and aspirations of girls with autism.
What Did They Learn?
Throughout the project, Beth and her team developed invaluable skills such as:
- Budgeting
- Leadership
- Project Management
- Filming and Editing
The film was released to coincide with National Autism Awareness Month, significantly amplifying their voices. Their work even garnered attention from the national press. Well done to everyone involved!
vInspired Schools continues to offer numerous opportunities and support for schools eager to kickstart their students’ volunteering journeys. Come and work with us!
