Learnings from Netroots UK 2012

On Saturday, I attended Netroots UK, the largest conference for grassroots campaigners focused on leveraging digital technologies to amplify their messages. This event aims to network and inspire activists across the country through debates, strategy sessions, and training workshops.

I was particularly interested in learning from experienced activists who utilize digital platforms in inspiring ways. Vinspired uses the internet and social media to connect with young people, supporting them in campaigning for causes that matter to them.

Key Themes from the Event

  1. Social Media Empowers the Voiceless

Sue Marsh, a disability rights campaigner, highlighted the power of social media through the success of the Spartacus Report, a Twitter campaign by disabled activists against welfare cuts. This campaign exemplified how digital platforms can provide a voice where traditional media may not, particularly for young people.

  2. No Hierarchy in Action

Sunny Hundal emphasized that campaigns should have no hierarchy, valuing every individual’s contribution. This mirrors our experience with Team v, where young people lead their own local campaigns, contributing to broader issues without seeking permission.

  3. Online Campaigning Should Drive Offline Activity

Blue State Digital reminded us that while online platforms are powerful for campaigners, effective campaigns also require ‘real world’ activities. Inspired by the success of Do Something in the US, Do Something UK by Vinspired engages young people in causes they care about, using online tools to inspire offline action.

As we prepare to launch our first Do Something campaign, the event underscored the pivotal role of technology in young people’s lives, highlighting social media as a significant force for change. I hope to see more young activists at future Netroots events, with our Do Something and Team v campaigners sharing their stories.
