Let’s Make 2017 the Year of Positivity
When you look back on 2016, what do you remember? The loss of influential celebrities, or perhaps the significant political changes that dominated the media?
For many, 2016 was a divisive year that saw our unity waver. It fueled negativity, discrimination, and disregard for others. It seems like the events of last year encouraged disrespectful dialogue and a lack of kindness.
Reflecting on last year, it saddens me that ‘love thy neighbor’ feels like a relic of the past. Acts of love and kindness seem overshadowed by hate crime and conflict. It’s no surprise that figures show a 19% rise in hate crimes in England and Wales.*
In such times, Vinspired poses the question, “What would the world be like if everyone volunteered?” Personally, I support this movement as it fosters understanding of the challenges people face. Harper Lee famously noted, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” Volunteering opens us to empathy and new perspectives.
Volunteering connects you with diverse individuals and inspires you to make a difference. It nurtures compassion and purpose. In my volunteering journey, I’ve met entrepreneurs, politicians, homeless individuals, and victims of domestic abuse—each story inspiring in its own way. Anyone can make an impact if they invest the time.
Beyond broadening horizons, volunteering offers personal rewards. I’ve gained confidence, discovered new interests, and developed skills useful in work and life. Thanks to Vinspired, I received funding to create a drama and filmmaking project at 17, an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Even small gestures can make a significant difference. Imagine if we all dedicated just five minutes a week to positive actions. Could we put down our phones to listen to someone in need, or offer a compliment to lift someone’s spirits? Small acts of kindness create immense impact.
This New Year, I challenge you to gift your time to others. Let’s spread positivity as freely as we do negativity and rediscover how to love one another.
