March 2016 Volunteer of the Month

Drumroll please for March’s Volunteer of the Month… Saleha Latif!

At just 17 years old, Saleha is transforming perceptions and breaking stereotypes amongst her peers, community members, and beyond. Her outstanding contribution to society was recognized by Zaeema Hussain, a fellow volunteer at Aik Saath.

Saleha’s Inspirational Journey

Zaeema shared, “Saleha brings a positive energy that comforts many of the young people she supports. Always eager to engage in varied activities, she seeks knowledge passionately and stays committed to her projects, always striving for improvement. Her warmth has made her a beloved member of our community.”

A Conversation with Saleha

How does it feel to be our Volunteer of the Month winner?

“It’s quite overwhelming, as it was unexpected, but I feel very honored to be selected.”

Tell us about your volunteering experience. What have you been up to?

“I’m working with Aik Saath, a group focused on conflict resolution and community cohesion. I advocate for mediation, tackle prejudice, and promote inclusive equality across ethnicity and gender. My aim is to foster a society where nobody feels marginalized.”

With Aik Saath, Saleha conducts workshops in schools, teaching acceptance and understanding to eliminate discrimination. She also chaired Slough’s Young People’s Question Time, bridging the gap between local youth and community leaders, fostering civic engagement.

In her project, Pride Against Prejudice, she tackles community prejudice, striving to instill pride and raise awareness, working towards a more cohesive society.

Memorable Volunteering Moments

One of Saleha’s memorable experiences was delivering sessions at a school in Swindon, followed by Q&A sessions. “Many students had never spoken to someone wearing a hijab before, and their curiosity led to engaging conversations. It was rewarding to help change their perceptions positively.”

Overcoming Challenges

Saleha shared a learning moment: “During a speech for an oral history project, I mispronounced a veteran’s name. I laughed it off, apologized, and corrected it.”

Skills Gained Through Volunteering

Volunteering has significantly improved Saleha’s public speaking and emotional intelligence. She’s become empathetic and determined to make a difference, expanding her worldview and learning to collaborate with diverse individuals.

Future Aspirations

Saleha is passionate about gender equality and aims to campaign extensively for those affected by gender inequality, including often-overlooked male victims. She also hopes to raise awareness about the Israel/Palestine crisis, contributing to peace efforts.

Message to Aik Saath

“A huge thank you to Aik Saath. They’ve opened numerous doors for me, inspiring and encouraging me to achieve more than I could imagine. I truly appreciate their support.”
