Meet November’s Volunteer Superhero
Meet Eleanor R., a skydiving, awareness-raising superstar who continues to inspire those around her by stepping out of her comfort zone. Eleanor’s story is a testament to how anyone can transform from shyness to world-changer with time and a lot of heart.
Eleanor has raised awareness for her sister’s condition, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and we think that’s amazing. Her dedication exemplifies how to make a difference through volunteering. Read more about Eleanor’s incredible journey.
1. How does it feel to be our Volunteer of the Month winner?
“It’s a surprise really, I didn’t think I would actually win. I was just grateful that my college nominated me in the first place!”
2. Tell us about your volunteering.
“My elder sister was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy at six weeks old, so I grew up in a family committed to raising awareness and support for the disease. I was fortunate to have such a supportive family that encouraged me to volunteer. This grew from helping CMUK to assisting organizations like the British Lung Foundation after my grandad passed away from a lung-related illness.”
3. What’s been your most surprising or memorable volunteering moment to date?
“Definitely doing my skydive while suffering from vertigo! It was an amazing experience.”
4. What’s been your most awkward volunteering moment? How did you cope?
“Initially, I was very shy at Cardiomyopathy support group meetings. However, stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me to meet incredible people with inspiring stories.”
5. What skills have you gained through volunteering?
“The most important skill I’ve gained is an open mind. Volunteering has taught me to not judge anyone before knowing their story. I’ve also gained confidence, making me comfortable with speaking to strangers.”
6. Is your volunteering part of a wider goal or aspiration?
“Our family aims to raise awareness of Cardiomyopathy, especially in young people like my sister.”
7. What would you be doing if you weren’t volunteering?
“Without volunteering, I wouldn’t have met incredible people or gained the confidence I have today.”
8. What would you like to say to the person who nominated you?
“A huge thank you to everyone at West Cheshire College for nominating me and supporting me throughout my journey.”
