New NEET Figures Reveal the Need for Varied Routes to Employment
Recent reports highlight a concerning trend: one in four young people in some communities are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). At Vinspired, we’ve empowered over one million young people through volunteering, equipping them with essential skills and the confidence to pursue their potential. Remarkably, 99% of our volunteers report increased confidence, and 90% believe they have a better chance of securing employment.
Yet, despite their enthusiasm and community contributions, many young people struggle to find employment. This lack of job opportunities, especially at entry-level, won’t change until economic growth resumes. However, engaging young people in meaningful activities now is crucial. Extended unemployment can lower future income, increase crime rates, and even reduce life expectancy. As one young person expressed, “…many of us feel that young people are not given a chance to prove our potential. This diminishes our emotions, self-esteem, capability, and motivation.”
Funding and efforts must focus on creating diverse employment pathways accessible to all young people, regardless of location. Initiatives like the Teen Biz program help young people build their enterprises, contributing to local economies. Additionally, opportunities in the voluntary and community sectors are vital.
Young people are the future leaders of communities and businesses; they hold the key to a resilient society. Supporting their potential now is essential to prevent long-term detrimental effects on communities nationwide.
