Sort Out Your Priorities, Mr Gove
Young people from 15 youth organizations, including Vinspired, have united to express their concern over the comments made by the Education Secretary, suggesting that youth policy is not a priority for central government. Representing over eight million young people nationwide, these organizations are urging a change in perspective.
In a recent survey, 92% of young people believe the government fails to show adequate concern for their futures, while 95% feel that youth policy should be a central government priority.
A Direction for My Future
During my school years, I struggled to find my path. I chose my GCSEs without much thought, and my A-Level choices were based on what I excelled at, rather than what I truly wanted. My life lacked direction until a Connexions worker introduced the Peer Supporters program. This initiative sparked my interest in Peer Education opportunities and volunteering as a Duke of Edinburgh Award leader and with the school’s Prince’s Trust projects. Youth work gave me a career goal and instilled confidence in my abilities.
Youth Work Shaped Me as a Person
Youth work transformed my life, providing me with confidence, skills, and leadership experience. It offered more personal development than formal education ever could, a sentiment shared by many.
What’s Happening Now?
Despite the clear benefits of youth policy, the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, has indicated that youth policy is primarily a local government issue. Youth policy is indeed a significant matter as it intersects with employment, poverty, and crime—affecting all “Big Important Issues” the government prioritizes. Investing in young people is essential for a prosperous and stable UK.
Who Does This Affect?
Youth policy impacts not only young people but their families, communities, and schools. It provides informal education and critical thinking skills, allowing young people to explore the world around them. Mr. Gove should meet the young people transformed by youth work to understand its importance before sidelining youth policy.
Neglecting youth policy could result in uneven development across regions and hinder the UK’s recovery from recession. Youth policy must be prioritized as a foundational issue impacting the nation’s future.
