Why Do You Volunteer?

Volunteering during the festive season is a rewarding experience. Like thousands of others, I dedicated my time over Christmas and found it incredibly fulfilling. In fact, it was the best part of my entire holiday season.

I spent Christmas Day helping to prepare and serve lunch at a local elderly care home. Although it was just a four-hour commitment, the time flew by. I met wonderful people, served delicious food, and felt that I made a meaningful difference in the residents’ holiday experience.

Reflecting on my time there, I found myself pondering a question I hadn’t asked my fellow volunteers: Why do you spend Christmas Day volunteering, away from family and friends? Our group was diverse, and I was curious about their motivations.

A few days later, I had the chance to ask one of them. Their simple yet profound answer was, “Because they needed volunteers.”

The reasons people volunteer are as varied as the volunteers themselves—from complex personal motivations to the basic human instinct to help those in need. Did you volunteer this Christmas? What motivated you to make that commitment? We’d love to hear your stories.
