Why Should Young People Care About What Happens to the NHS After the Next Election?

The future of the NHS is a pressing issue that requires the attention of young people. With elections around the corner, the decisions made today will shape the healthcare landscape of tomorrow. Swing the Vote: Young people DO care about being heard at elections and it’s crucial to understand why your vote matters.

The Importance of the NHS

The UK is privileged to have a free healthcare system, but changes are inevitable. Among young adults aged 18-25, there is a significant debate on whether mental health should receive the same attention as physical health. Some political parties are pushing for extended doctor appointment hours, while others advocate for psychological therapies within the NHS framework.

The NHS, now 67 years old, remains a focal point in politics due to its significant taxpayer funding, vast employment opportunities, and the millions it serves daily. Engaging in the decision-making process by voting is essential to safeguard our taxes and health.

Why Voting Matters

Everyone will need NHS services eventually, and many might find themselves working within its ranks. The NHS is one of the largest employers globally, comparable to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the US Department of Defense, and Walmart.

The NHS is celebrated as a leading healthcare model. A 2014 Commonwealth Fund study ranked it highest among healthcare systems of eleven nations. Both men and women now live an average of ten years longer, but the NHS is under pressure from rising patient numbers and evolving health challenges.

“All parts of the NHS are struggling with ever-increasing patient demand, staff shortages, and insufficient resources. Key areas, such as A&E and GP services, are under particular stress and in some cases are close to breaking point.”

Dr. Mark Porter, Chairman, BMA

Political Stances on NHS Funding

All major political parties have pledged to maintain free NHS healthcare and increase funding to meet growing demands. The Conservatives propose funding increases through economic growth, UKIP suggests leaving the EU, while Labour plans to tackle tax avoidance and impose a levy on tobacco companies.

Mental health is also a focal point. The Conservatives want to set waiting time standards, the Liberal Democrats aim for equal treatment for mental health issues, pledging an extra £3.5bn, and the Green Party seeks to prioritize mental health with adequate resources. Labour proposes amending the NHS Constitution to provide equal priority to mental health.

“Children and young people are the population of the future and we are letting them down.”
