Your Daily Dose of ‘Fantasy Therapy’ for World Book Night
Storytelling has been a cornerstone of human culture for centuries. In a world saturated with television and online content, traditional stories in the form of books are often overlooked. However, the magic of stories remains impactful, offering essential life lessons and nurturing creativity and imagination.
A recent study highlights a concerning trend: 1 in 3 children do not own a book, and 25% do not consider reading important. With 74% of young people having internet access, the allure of screens often overshadows the joy of reading. But what does this mean for our society?
As a child, I adored Greek mythology, particularly the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Initially, it was a thrilling tale of heroism, but deeper analysis revealed profound life lessons about courage, strategy, and wisdom. Stories are like metaphorical crash dummies for life, providing children with insights into human behavior and consequences.
Bruno Bettelheim, in his book The Uses of Enchantment, asserts, “The child identifies with the hero not because of their goodness, but because the hero’s condition makes a deep positive appeal to him.” A child deprived of books misses out on the wisdom and creative freedom that stories provide.
Our Team v leaders are championing literacy across the country, helping young people discover the transformative power of reading. Literacy is crucial in all walks of life, but the “fantasy therapy” from stories holds immense value for both children and adults.
Reflect on your favorite childhood story. How did it shape you? Share your thoughts and join us in celebrating the power of storytelling. For more inspiration, watch Team v’s latest campaign video and learn how to get involved in World Book Night.
