Highlighting Student Volunteer Achievements at Kingston University
During this week, universities across the nation have the opportunity to showcase the impressive contributions of their students. At Kingston University, Student Volunteering Week is more than just a celebration; it’s a chance to spotlight the inspiring work of student volunteers.
As a Volunteer Coordinator, the week is an exciting time filled with meeting enthusiastic new volunteers through special events that energize the student community. My role involves fostering connections between students and organizations, ensuring both parties benefit from the volunteer experience.
Celebrating Student Volunteering
Student Volunteering Week allows us to take a moment to recognize the remarkable efforts of Kingston’s student volunteers. This week, we’ve captured the attention of the university leadership, including a special mention in the Vice Chancellor’s newsletter. The increased visibility has also led to more traffic on our KUSU blog and local media coverage, much to the delight of our volunteers.
In addition to celebrating current volunteers, we strive to make volunteering accessible to newcomers. Our annual taster sessions are always a hit, providing students with a glimpse into the world of volunteering.
Making a Difference
Already, our volunteers have revitalized a neglected nature trail and transformed the kennels at a local greyhound shelter with fresh paint. Upcoming activities include creative workshops like bunting-making for local street events and a visit from Knit for Peace.
These introductory sessions often serve as a gateway for students to discover the fulfilling nature of volunteer work, offering a break from academic pressures, enhancing their resumes, and promoting civic engagement.
