John Sennett embodies the spirit of volunteering through his love for sports. He has dedicated over 600 hours to volunteering, earning the prestigious v10, v50, and v100 awards. Our blogger discovered more about his inspiring journey.

How Did You Achieve 600 Hours of Volunteering?

“I’ve collaborated with several sports organizations, gradually taking on larger roles. I actively seek opportunities to learn new sports, managing multiple roles simultaneously. I’ve volunteered with Winchester Goal Ball Club, a visually impaired Paralympic sport, and organized community events at St James’ Park in Southampton. Currently, I’m running a disability cricket club and two more community games events.”

Getting Involved with Friends of St James’ Park

“I found the opportunity on do-it.org. Initially, I had no experience in event planning, but my sporting background was an asset. I applied, and everything evolved from there.”

Tackling Challenges Without Prior Experience

“Initially, I planned to assist in planning, but the opportunity arose to make a significant impact. With my background in disability sports, I aimed to make the event inclusive, leading all sports activities. I organized 13 activities, handled marketing and social media, and recruited and trained volunteers. The event attracted 3,000 attendees, proving the hard work was worthwhile!”

Continuing with Friends of St James’ Park

“Absolutely! As a Sports Representative, I plan events and projects. I’m organizing a Guinness World Record attempt for Rounders next summer, aiming to unite the community.”

Bringing the Community Together

“Yes, volunteering opens doors for others to engage in sports, especially in disability sports, which is my passion. I began volunteering to help people achieve their goals, and I’m witnessing that happen.”

Personal Growth Through Volunteering

“I’ve transformed from a shy, nervous individual to someone who leads events and inspires others to volunteer. My experiences led me to create a personal blog, sharing my journey and advising potential volunteers.”

Winning Volunteer of the Month

“I cried. The recognition for years of dedication felt rewarding.”

“John has given over 150 hours to one event. His efforts made it inclusive for all ages and abilities.” - Marina Murphy, Community Volunteer Coordinator
