V Goes Back to School

Vinspired is thrilled to announce the launch of an innovative school community action programme in collaboration with the Department for Children, Schools and Families. This initiative is set to build on the pillars of citizenship education, aiming to foster a culture of community action across all secondary schools in England.

In April 2009, the Prime Minister outlined a vision for young people in England to complete 50 hours of community service by age 19. This vision aims to expand opportunities for voluntary community work among students, especially those aged 14 to 16. It aligns with Recommendation 4 of the Russell Commission, which advocates for a volunteering ethos in all schools.

Some educators are already excelling in community action, integrating initiatives like the Duke of Edinburgh programme and Community Sports Leaders Awards. Vinspired’s programme will enhance these efforts, providing educators with additional support and resources to facilitate and expand community voluntary service.

The school community action programme encourages students to explore innovative ways to engage in community support. Vinspired is appointing a dedicated team of school advisors in April 2010. These advisors will collaborate with schools to develop student-led, school-based community action initiatives, strengthen connections between schools and local civic organizations, and acknowledge students’ contributions.

Vinspired’s existing vinvolved teams across England will leverage their expertise and relationships with schools and local entities to kickstart the 14-16 programme effectively. Our research indicates that once young individuals engage in volunteering, they’re more likely to continue participating. This initiative supports Vinspired’s goal of fostering a life-cycle approach to engaging youth in community action, volunteering, and civic engagement.

With the launch of this new schools programme, Vinspired takes a significant step towards realizing this vision of youth empowerment through community involvement.
