Trap, Neuter, Return Volunteer South London

Did you know that one female cat can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years? Join Cats Protection as a volunteer and help feral and farm cats to live healthier, happier lives. Trap, neuter and return (TNR) is the most humane and effective way to manage feral cats and we are looking for welfare enthusiasts to join the team covering South London- ideally Croydon or Sutton.

About this Opportunity

Unfortunately, thousands of cats each year are abandoned or have strayed and rely on charities like Cats Protection for help. Becoming a TNR volunteer is one way you can make a real difference to cats in your local area. Our TNR volunteers help reduce the number of feral cats by raising awareness of our TNR programmes, setting humane traps to safely capture cats, taking them to local vets to be neutered, and returning them back to their territory. Local TNR programmes are crucial, as feral and abandoned cats present a huge challenge for communities across the UK.

What can you expect to be doing?
- Distributing information leaflets

-Arranging vet appointments at partnered vet practices for cats who will be trapped

- Trapping cats using humane methods

- Taking cats to local vets to be neutered (spayed/castrated)

-Recording information about feral colonies
- Returning cats to their territory

What are the benefits to you and the cats?
You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge, and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by helping reduce the number of unwanted cats and improving the lives of cats in your local area. You will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.

We're ideally looking for someone who

  • -Lives in Croydon or Sutton
  • - Has a full, clean driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • -Can be available during weekdays for trapping cats and transferring them to and from the vet
  • -Potentially can involve a friend, family member or acquaintance to join them in the volunteering role
  • - Has good interpersonal and communication skills
  • - Has a well organised and practical approach
  •  - Has patience and perseverance
  • - Has the ability to deal with sensitive situations
  • - Has good communication skills
  • - Is willing to follow Cats Protections policies and procedures, and complete training to prepare themselves to carry out this role effectively
  • -Can operate autonomously if needed

Time expectation
This is a flexible role with no minimum time commitment. The hours needed will vary depending on the number of cats identified for specific TNR campaigns. Our current TNR volunteers spend about 2 to 4 hours per week in this role.

About the Organisation

CatsProtection

From humble beginnings in 1927, Cats Protection has grown to become the UK's leading feline welfare charity. We now help around 235,000 cats and kittens every year through our network of over 260 volunteer-run branches, 29 adoption centres and our homing centre. Our work doesn’t stop there, however: we also provide an array of cat care information via our publications, website and Helpline; promote the benefits of neutering to prevent unwanted litters from being born and becoming the abandoned cats of tomorrow and seek to educate people of all ages about cats and their care.
