A Young Leader’s Take on Radio 1’s Big Conversation
On Tuesday, 13th September, I attended the Radio 1 “Big Conversation” event at City Hall. Encouraged by my volunteer coordinator, I was ready to showcase my debating skills, as he had seen my potential at a previous engagement. This event was designed as a platform for young people to engage in dialogue with influential figures, and I was eager to participate, although unsure of what to expect.
Upon arrival at the iconic City Hall, I received seating instructions, joining a table with seven other young individuals, all unfamiliar to me. Our table also included Luc Delaney, a Facebook employee, and Michelle Mone, a renowned businesswoman. Meeting new people always excites me, and I was eager to dive into the discussions.
Early on, I was interviewed by Radio 1 about my views and aspirations, such as my hypothetical actions if I were to lead the country for a day. I felt my responses resonated with the interviewer, which was encouraging.
The highlight of my day was the rich conversations at our table. Peers from diverse backgrounds shared their perspectives on various issues, offering insights into how these matters affected them. Hearing stories from people my age and learning from Michelle Mone’s experiences was truly inspiring. It was heartening to see others recognize societal challenges and proactively brainstorm solutions, fostering a sense of unity.
Being surrounded by like-minded individuals with unique narratives, yet achieving consensus during decision-making, was invigorating. I left the chamber with a sense of optimism and a positive outlook on society, eager to participate in future events.
