Initially, I was hesitant about volunteering for Vinspired, nudged by a friend’s suggestion. My expectations were quickly overturned upon arrival. Volunteering isn’t just about discomfort or backbreaking tasks like litter picking. It can be engaging, tailored to individual skills and passions, and most importantly, incredibly rewarding!
My passion is writing, and I’ve been lucky to volunteer and pen down my experiences with Vinspired. The diverse skills and initiatives on display are truly inspiring. For instance, Sam and Sam’s unique acoustic renditions of S-Club’s ‘Don’t Stop Moving’ and George Harrison’s ‘Here Comes the Sun’ added a musical flair to the event.
The Vinspired Climate Squad was a highlight, raising awareness about climate change. They inspired festival-goers to power devices through cycling, aiming to recruit young volunteers to lead carbon-cutting projects in their communities. Check out more about their efforts here.
On the other side of the bus, Claire and Fliss, our Physics Busters, wowed everyone with the physics of non-Newtonian fluids, aka the custard trick!
Bass6, the charismatic beatboxer, was the day’s star, thrilling audiences with tracks like Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’. He later teamed up with DJ Theon for a crowd-pleasing rendition of ‘No Woman No Cry’.
Joining the festivities was Skinny Lister, an acoustic folk band from Greenwich. Their performance, featuring a sing-along of ‘South Australia’, captivated the crowd. Lorna, their vocalist and Ukulele player, shared her past volunteering experiences and expressed how inspiring it can be.
I also caught up with Chris, a Vinspired veteran since 2006. He began volunteering to gain work experience during university and found the rewards so compelling that he stayed on.
June marks just the start of the Summer of Give. Explore upcoming opportunities and get involved! Head over to Vinspired to learn more.
