Dan’s SOG Isle of Wight Blog: Sunday

The final day of the Isle of Wight Festival 2010 marked a vibrant culmination of the Summer of Give initiative. As the festival unfolded, attendees experienced a dynamic range of performances from basketball freestylers to aerobics instructors, all contributing to a lively atmosphere.

For a glimpse of these moments, check out our Facebook page. Today, we bring you insights from one of our enthusiastic volunteers, Dan, who explored festival-goers’ attitudes towards volunteering.

Volunteer Insights at Isle of Wight

On the last day with the vbus, Dan ventured into the festival crowd to gather thoughts on the Summer of Give project and volunteering in general. Contrary to his expectations, he discovered an abundance of positive attitudes towards volunteering.

Challenging Misconceptions

Dan initially assumed that volunteering might not appeal to many. However, conversations revealed a different story. Ellie from Newport shared her interest in volunteering with children for work experience, despite a common belief that volunteering is a thankless task. Another volunteer commented, “Some people think you don’t get anything out of it, but I like it.”

Enthusiastic Engagement

As Dan conversed with more individuals, he noticed a growing interest in volunteering. Oxfam volunteers echoed this sentiment, finding people eager to learn about volunteering opportunities.

Lucy, an Oxfam volunteer from Brighton, highlighted the benefits of volunteering at festivals: free entry and enriching experiences. She emphasized that volunteering is fun, rewarding, and enhances one’s CV.

The Appeal of the Summer of Give

Young festival-goers showed particular interest in v and the Summer of Give. This initiative allows participants to engage in activities they are passionate about, transforming volunteering into a valuable and enjoyable experience. One festival-goer expressed her enthusiasm for volunteering in photography, not only for the experience but also to strengthen her university application.

Volunteering as a Transformative Experience

v aims to make volunteering an essential and attractive activity throughout the summer. From Dan’s experience at the Isle of Wight, it’s clear that volunteering is an opportunity everyone should seize.
