Volunteer Readers Needed for people with sight loss
Do you enjoy reading and want to make a real difference? As a Reader Volunteer, you’ll provide one-to-one support for blind and partially sighted people who need help with reading and writing. Whether it’s reading letters, filling in forms, or simply sharing a magazine or book aloud, your time and voice can make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.
About this Opportunity
Where and When?
This role takes place in members' homes. Volunteering is flexible, with visits arranged directly between you and the person you support, allowing you to find times that work for both of you.
What Will You Be Doing?
As a Reader Volunteer, you will visit people in their homes to provide practical reading and writing support. This may include helping with post, correspondence, and forms, as well as reading newspapers, magazines, books, and other materials aloud. Through regular visits, you will build positive relationships and provide companionship, helping people stay connected to information, hobbies, and interests that matter to them.
What Skills and Experience Are Needed?
We are looking for people who are caring, friendly, and understanding, with good communication skills and confidence in reading aloud. You should be patient, reliable, and a good listener, with the ability to commit to the role for at least six months. No previous experience is required, as full training and support will be provided. The most important qualities are a willingness to help and a desire to make a difference.
What Will You Gain From the Role?
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful and practical difference in someone's life while gaining valuable experience supporting people living with sight loss. You can develop your confidence, build new skills, enhance your own wellbeing through volunteering, and form rewarding connections with the people you support.
What Support Will You Receive?
You will receive a full induction and training programme, including sight loss awareness and sighted guiding training. Ongoing learning and development opportunities will be available throughout your volunteering journey. Agreed out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed, and you will receive regular support and guidance from your Home Services Coordinator.
Criminal Record Check (DBS)
This role requires an Enhanced DBS check for working with adults at risk, as volunteers provide support within people's homes.
