A Young Person’s Perspective on the EU Referendum
Life after Brexit has posed unique challenges for young people, yet it also presents opportunities for growth and engagement. The sense of unity and optimism among today’s youth is vital as we navigate these changes. On June 24th, the British public voted to leave the EU, with a significant divergence in voting patterns between young people and the older generations. While 75% of 18-24 year-olds who voted chose to remain, those under 18 were not given a voice.
Staying Engaged in Democracy
It’s crucial for young people to stay involved in political processes beyond the EU Referendum. Our democratic engagement should not be confined to a single event. Here are some ways to continue advocating for what we believe in:
1. Join a Political Party
Joining a political party is a fundamental step to influence change. Many parties have youth sections, providing a platform for young voices to be heard and to influence future manifestos. 5 ways to get involved in politics.
2. Write to Your MP
Your Member of Parliament represents your interests. Engage with them by writing letters or using social media platforms like Twitter. This is an effective way to ensure your concerns are acknowledged.
3. Volunteer
Volunteering is a powerful tool for empowerment, allowing young people to contribute to their communities. It fosters intergenerational connections and can be an excellent addition to your CV or UCAS application.
