Parliament Building

Exploring Youth Participation in Politics

Increasing awareness among young people about the intricacies of government processes is vital. Politics isn’t just a domain of middle-aged, white males dictating societal norms; it is a dynamic and diverse sphere that influences everything from public transportation to youth hangout spots. Engaging youth in politics early on is crucial for fostering trust and encouraging civic engagement.

The event featured prominent speakers like the Deputy Leader of the Lib-Dems, who discussed the importance of youth participation. He emphasized how politicians often overlook young people, especially those unable to vote. To build trust and seek their future votes, politicians must engage with youth now.

A Unique Experience at Parliament

Stepping into Parliament was unparalleled. Before joining the V20 initiative, politics seemed irrelevant. However, this event illuminated how political decisions impact my daily life as a young person. It provided an excellent networking opportunity with organizations and MPs involved with groups like NCVYS, which advocate for youth engagement across political lines.

Success Stories and Networking

Hearing success stories from projects funded by V was inspiring. One notable example was the Prince’s Trust and their Young Ambassador Scheme, which parallels the V20 initiative. A participant shared how, despite facing challenges after emigrating from Nigeria, he secured a position through the scheme.

During the networking session, I spoke with groups like Hope UK, which educates on drug and alcohol awareness among youth. Their support will be invaluable as I start my internship in Health Research.

This experience boosted my confidence and enhanced my networking and relationship-building skills, crucial for my future endeavors.

Looking Forward

I’m eager to participate in similar opportunities. Who knows? Perhaps one day, I’ll be engaging with influential figures like Chris Willis MP.
