Let’s Not Allow the Riots to Overshadow the Positive Contribution of Young People

The recent criminal behavior witnessed in our communities has been shocking and deeply concerning. However, it’s crucial that we resist making snap judgments about the causes of these riots. Our first priority should be to restore public order. Once calm has returned, we need to carefully consider the underlying issues that led to such extreme actions by some young people and, importantly, what measures can prevent recurrence.

It’s important to remember that the vast majority of young people were not involved in the riots. In fact, those who helped clean up the aftermath far outnumbered those who contributed to the chaos. At Vinspired, we are privileged to know thousands of young people who contribute positively to their communities every single day. We must ensure these events do not overshadow their valuable contributions to our society.

Youth Voices on Social Action

Young people are actively engaging in social action projects, aiming to change community perceptions and foster goodwill. As one participant in the NCS Summer of a Lifetime program shared, “What people have done in the riots makes the public look down on us. We’re planning a social action project working with homeless individuals. By doing something positive, we hope to change community perceptions and build goodwill.”

Another young voice expressed, “Perhaps if they felt more a part of their community, they would be less inclined to destroy it. Understanding the greater impact of their actions could foster empathy and community spirit.”

To truly appreciate the positive impact young people make, let’s explore initiatives like the Reverse Riots: help set the record straight about what our young people have to offer and challenging the negative perceptions of young people.

Together, we can support young people in their path to becoming active, positive contributors to society.
