Living it up with Labour
UPDATE 04/10/10: Thanks to Mo v20, we officially have the support of Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party. Here’s the message we received: “I wish you all the best with your youth volunteering campaign, and I will forward this email to my volunteers on this campaign. Best wishes, Ed Miliband MP.”
Embracing Volunteerism at the Labour Party Conference
Politics can be confusing, but my passion for volunteering is unwavering. When the opportunity arose to attend the Labour Party Conference in Manchester, I was thrilled. As part of the v20 initiative, I seized the chance to engage with influential figures about the critical role of youth volunteering.
Entering the conference felt like a privilege. After navigating airport-style security, I joined the bustling Youth Zone event, reminiscent of the vibrant launch of The Anatomy of Youth. To maximize networking, I positioned myself strategically at entrance points. The event featured inspiring speeches, including one from newly elected leader Ed Miliband.
New Advocates for “I Heart Volunteering”
Our campaign to elevate the profile of volunteering is gaining momentum. We proudly welcome JOHN PRESCOTT and HARRIET HARMAN as new supporters. Despite his tough reputation, Mr. Prescott was warm and engaged with the idea of youth volunteering. Harriet Harman, despite her busy schedule, showed genuine interest and proudly posed with our campaign logo.
Walking home barefoot (the inevitable result of a long day in heels!), I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. Engaging key political figures in the conversation about volunteering’s importance to young people felt incredibly rewarding.
The team at v did an outstanding job, with special thanks to Razia and Tyrell from Greater Manchester, who personified youth volunteering. Araba, your efforts were invaluable.
As Anita Roddick famously said, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try going to bed with a mosquito.” Let’s all be vMosquitos and keep making a difference!
