Moving on from the YAB, Next Stop: British Youth Council!

It’s almost that time of year again—and I’m not talking about a holiday to somewhere sunny and exotic. As part of Vinspired’s current Youth Advisory Board (YAB), the time has come to hand over the reins to a new group of inspiring young people, joining our prestigious alumni. From attending debates at the House of Commons to meeting influential leaders, it has been a spectacular 12 months. However, the opportunities do not end here; as one door closes, another opens!

New Opportunities

After your time with the YAB is over, you might wonder: Where to from here? How can I continue the work I’m doing now? One answer lies in applying to become a trustee for the British Youth Council (BYC), where Vinspired acts as a National Member organization. The role of a trustee is complex and demands responsibility, especially when serving one of the largest youth organizations in the UK.

Hopes & Aspirations

At the BYC, the message is simple: participation and empowerment. They ensure that all young people have their voices heard in decision-making processes, both locally and nationally. By standing as a trustee, I hope to leverage the experience gained from the YAB to address issues affecting youth nationally and internationally.

What Would You Like to Do if Elected as a Trustee?

In my manifesto, I have three big aims for the next year, with youth services being a significant focus. BYC is part of a coalition called ‘Choose Youth,’ and my goal is to emphasize the importance of activities outside the classroom. If local councils won’t provide basic facilities, we must prioritize alternative funding for youth services.

Why Do You Want to Be a Trustee?

I am passionate, resilient, and determined to serve my mandate if elected. Balancing university commitments with the role’s responsibilities excites me, much like any YAB member will attest to Vinspired’s dynamic environment.

Issues Needing More Attention

Some emerging issues for young people include:

  • Digital Literacy & IT Skills
  • Access to housing
  • Re-engaging youth in politics
  • Reading and literacy
  • Our relationship with Europe
